Movie Watching

So I just finished watching "Sketches of Frank Gehry" and it was fantastic. I had to watch it twice because my initial reaction was that there isn't much to this movie. But on the second viewing and watching the included interview with Sydney Pollack, I think this is the best you could hope for as far as understanding an artist process goes. You get a small glimmer into what this man has gone through, see some marvelous architecture, and better understand that the final product is never a destination easily reached. Oh and while watching on the second and a half time and talking on the phone, I started doing these.

What do you see?

Yet another example of me wandering off from a shoot and taking random pictures. I'm not going to elaborate on this picture to much and here is why. What I saw in this image and what others have pointed out to me have been varied and interesting. If I'm being vague it's only so I don't affect anyone's idea of what this exactly is. So share with me, what do you see?

Henry Rollins doing a kids Album???

Ok this is not photoshoped!!! One of the fellas at work was listening to some of Henry Rollins spoken word on napster, as one does. When he had the thought, hmmmmm what other fine spoken word is out there? Perhaps, this man thought, I'll find something in the same catagory as Mr. Rollins and I will enjoy that as well. Wait a second... Childrens?!?! You got it. Apparently napster thinks that Henry Rollins is just what your kids needed. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, have a couple of his books, love rollins band, I just think it might be a bit much for kids. On top of all that, in the top twenty five childrens albums at the gloriuos number 23(at the time) is.... you gussed it, the mekanik himself. Just as a nice touch I also love that it even has a little EXPLICIT tag on the album, you think they would have a filter or something. oh well.

I'm not a sell out!

ok, I just needed to post up a few real drawings so I don't feel like a total sellout to the machine. I apoligize for the lack of formatting but if I don't just post them up I might not get around to it any time soon.
So here are some life drawings of pretty ladies. Can't go wrong with that right?

Just another day on the job

So here is another set photo I'm not going to say what the job is yet, and hopefully I'll be able to post more up later but if I don't start now well, you know, the whole lazy thing might kick in.
Seemed a little excessive for one little ol' bee. On second thought, I shouldn't judge, maybe he's allergic or something...
This is me lost at 6 a.m. and waiting for a very cranky van driver to pick me up. If you look at the next photo you can see that we went from cold and foggy to...

being backed so badly in the sun I think I actually saw a flying boat. Really? wow...

He lives!!

Ok, so it's been over a month since I posted anything new but hey, things have been busy. Maybe not so busy that I couldn't have posted anything but what would you rather me do, continue to slave away in front of the computer, getting some bizarre radiation skin burn from the monitors gaze, or out and about living life! That's what I thought. So how do I reward people who have been waiting for a month for new content? With pictures of giant artery clogging burgers of course! (allegedly artery clogging... I don't want to be sued)
It's the money shot! Hide your children!

It will crush us all! Can you actually be crushed from the inside? (allegedly crushed from the inside...)

People I see pt.1

update: for anyone who has already seen this work, I know, it's from a older post, but it fit the topic so well and who knows when I'll have time to scan more stuff. So please enjoy and comment!

One of my instructors use to encourage us to go out and experience as much life as possible. This was based on the opinion( which I agree with) that all of our art is based on the people and places we see. There is nothing new under the sun, only different ways of compiling it. So while doodling around sometimes I notice that my drawings tend to resemble people I know or have seen. At this point I either stop or try to avoid it. Sometimes (actually most of the time) I'm completely unaware that it looks like someone until I'm a good halfway through it. I really enjoy embracing the way the mind works, you have to let your mind wander around and stumble upon things that you knew, but really weren't aware of.
I'd also like you to think of this as sort of a meditation. I don't think letting a little thing like not being able to draw well stand in your way(because clearly I don't hehe). I think just next time you get a little restless make some little free scribble, and look very closely at it, and think about what lies within.
Just to make this thing a little more interesting I'll try and explain where these drawings started (first stroke, scribble sort of thing).
So above I just started with the spiral for the eye, that's when I noticed that the way the ink was blotting up, it sort of looked like an eye. Then I chased that idea trying to keep a theme of lines flowing from single points of origin.
Above, I started with the line that now makes up the bridge of the nose. I had no particular ideas when I started thus why there are little gnarly guys on top and the indication of some Ziggy looking guy by the left eye. Anyhow, after the nose I just started making spiral, maybe thinking of design more than actually making it look like something. While making the spiral again, I noticed it was looking like an eye so I just kept that idea of a spiral and on continuous line for each feature.Above, This one is less of an accident as I was looking at this guy who sat right across from me. Again, it started as a scribble that ended up looking vaguely like his posture. Then I built on that, but actually trying to make it look like him.
Above, If you've seen my marker mind blurb post you sort of know how this one works. I think I started just scribbling one line that now makes up the profile. Then I just started adding random features and more marker stuff. I think the key motivation was just working on a way of texturing the hair with the marker values supporting it, now I'm not taking credit for texture pattern, like I said this is all stuff I've seen before, I'm just trying to see how I can use it.

Above, while scribbling to see if my pen still had ink in it I accidentally started the hair. Then I just built off of that.

Above, now I pulled these images from all sorts of books and pads that I've worked in over the last 3 months or so, so this one is another drawing done in a lined notebook, and is buried in the middle of 20 or 30 some odd Maya xyz translation values. I think I was just limited by drawing the profile so heavily and straight, totally forgetting that I had to get a hand in there, so I just tried to make it look like I did it on purpose.

This is how most of my work goes, it's sort of the mind equivalent to "the right place, at the right time". Does it make me a fraud and/or a hack? Yeah, but I"m pretty comfortable with that.

Shy Guy concepts

Some more look dev. stuff for characters. Still have BG's in the works so hopefully I'll be able to post some characters in an actual scene soon. Although I still have more layouts to do. All thoughts are welcome...

Little shy layouts

Going back to my little shy girl post, here are some two-page layouts that I've started to do tone studies for. They are in no particular order so don't try and read into any story yet. I'm also thinking about text placement and designing my environment, since basically the whole story takes place in this one little area. Hopefully I'll continue to post these things and then maybe some more look devl. stuff. Let me know what you think.

I love post-its

What is this? Who is this? I don't really know, all I know is someone left some post-its by my desk and damn it, I'm going to use them. Every part of the buffalo I say! After thinking about it for a while this is probably how I feel after staring at the monitor for a few hours straight. This is about the time I go for a little walk around the block.

Illustration Friday - Feet

So illustration Friday is upon us, and I happen to find a related sketch. To be honest though I did this last week while I was sick and in a Nyquil daze. No my had isn't that ugly, but my feet are that odd.

More pics...

More photos just walking around set. None of these are actually related to the commercial, I feel uneasy posting anything like that until after it starts airing. Also, I think I'm just going to edit these post instead of constantly making new ones, I've got tons of pics to sort through so you should see more over the next week or two, work permiting.

Random Pics

Just finished up another three day shoot for another Honda spot. I got a little antsy inbetween setups so I started to wonder around. Took some of these pics while wondering around the huge hanger, Amazing some times the random junk you see around, especially in a place like this, where people just toss stuff not really thinking about the juxtaposition of certain things.
This just fascinated me because I'm fascinated with kitsch stuff.

little shy girl

Style frame I'm working on for a book, god help me if i ever want to make this move. I think while working on this I came to the obvious conclusion that not every idea deserves to move. Format is part of the art. Any thoughts?

One greedy aligator

This is a very cool print entitled "First in Line" by Amanda Visell. I saw this at Gallery Nineteen Eighty-eight and just could not resist buying it, I mean, look at that look on his face? It's classic!! I have a link to her blog on the side as well as the gallery, check them out both very cool. Now I have to go get it framed...

Arty Farty

This is me trying to be clever when I was supposed to be taking reference photos for the Honda "Mudflaps" spot. Just in case we had to model any part of it or needed texture ref.

A little birdy

Foolin' around, still trying to feel out a design for a short. It was here that I decided I wanted my characters to have a flat feeling, It had to do with a story element.

Bears.... Grrrrr.....

Polar Bear.... Grrr....

Not sure why, but I felt the need to draw some ugly bears. Oh, and a wiener dog.

A moment

You know those lovely little buttons at the top of blogger pages? The ones with Blogger and search, previous and random blog? I often just take the random(next) button for a little ride . It's the only way to come across stuff you'd never find on you own. So while floating around and reading, I actually became uncomfortable. I felt like I was spying on people. I suppose people are putting this stuff out thier intentionally but putting yourself out there like that is frightning. I think that's part of the appeal too. All the benefits of releasing some thoughts, venting and so forth, and none of the judgement. No odd looks or twisted faces. While I just wanted to share pics and such with my friends, some people use it as therepy. There's nothing wrong with that, I just learned something new.
