People I See Pt. II

Goodness, It's been quite awhile hasn't it? And I had been doing so well with the updates too. ah well, such is life. I have a lot of scans and pics that I have been meaning to share but have been too busy/lazy to share. In between moving homes and moving offices it's been all kinds of craziness.
So enough with the excuses, lets get to some content. If you haven't seen my previous post about this then know that the premise for this whole affair is this. Work is boring. I don't care what you do, at some point it becomes old hat and boring. So to fill the time I draw, sketch, doodle, and otherwise occupy my wasted life with things that entertain me in the short run. I realize that sounds kind of negative but it really isn't. These time when my brain shuts down are some of my most thoughtful times. So here in no specific fashion is things I see.

Is it a rip off?

Found this interesting video at
It's a great way to see how people think and make art. I think a lot more people are guilty of this than they would like to admit. There isn't anything wrong with it, I just think once you learn where you are drawing your inspirations from you can do a better job of controlling them.

and all the figgies went wee wee wee all the way home

So finally, the little cookie that thought it was a fruit, Fig newton has wrapped and I am enjoying some quite time in between jobs. And damn does it feel good. In order to keep my cool during the job i occupy any down time with little doodles.
From the first one it's pretty obvious what was on my mind. As for the second one, I really have no idea why I would make a fig newton a transvestite. Oh well. I'm working some neat little pitch for work right now and using the rest of the time to finish that damn book and other personal stuff.

Send in the clowns

So I've missed a week of posting and I'm sorry about that. I was a little lame, a little lazy, and mostly busy animating little cookies running around for Fig Newton. More of that to come.

Anyway this little guy is an idea I've had bouncing around for some time yet only now do I actually have the time to do anything about it. You see with the big glut of CG penguin movies such as Happy Feet, Surfs Up, and those penguins from Madagascar, I figured that this fad will end soon and hard. What will become of all those CG actors? Will they be left in a void? Perhaps a second wave of movies will hit and we will see their popularity return. Ecstatic Feet? Surfs STILL up? Those Penguins from Madagascar 2: Electric Boogaloo? I think not.
More than likely they will end up like every other actor in Hollywood, working as a waiter, in a coffee shop or staring in some sort of "Alternative" entertainment.
So I present to you all the first of The out of work cartoon actors. This first series will mostly be about penguins as I love drawing the little guys and there are so many great situations to place them in. So here he is, crying on the inside.
My final question is, if these guys were little vinyl toys would anyone be interested? I see a lot of what I consider junk toys out there but they get snatched up like crazy. I figured if I put a little more personality into them then well...
Would you buy one?

And the mind wanders at work yet again...

Seeing as I can't stand to ever throw out a piece of paper, most of my work drawings have been on the back of script notes, shot list and other misc. work related paperwork. It would be awful if some poor tree died in order to make a dumb ass commercial. Hopefully little sketches like this will pull these unfortunate out of an awful paper limbo and send it to a tree farm in the sky. Or perhaps come back as a winning lotto ticket, or a bit of scrap paper some pretty lady scratches her phone number upon for some nervous fella.

Knee deep in it

What to say... There is entirely too much going on at the moment, work is busy, tons of projects I'm trying to finish up at home, personal finance issues hang in the balance(taxes...grrr). But I've made a commitment to myself to post stuff at least once a week, and this shall be no exception. Just a little sketch I filled in from life a while ago. I took notice of how certain people around walk and idle. Everyone has there default pose, personal gesture, way of handling their selves. This person in particular either had really bad posture or just had an obvious way of expressing (I'm thinking the latter). I believe this particular pose was covered in the Richard Williams book "Animators Survival Kit". Anyhow, take some time to observe people, it will enrich your art, and even if you aren't an artist, it should enrich your understanding of people and hopefully make you appreciate life just a little more.

Some people win..

...some people lose, I suppose everyone else is a push. The grand lottery of life is a funny thing. Some people are born into enormous wealth and privilege and breeze through the rest of their lives having never accomplished anything. Some born with these same opportunities use it to be great philanthropist and share their gift with he world. Others scratch their way up from the bottom of the barrel to become great, only to degenerate into the former class of people that just slide by until they die.
What's my point with all of this? I really don't know. If you happened to be blessed with money or skill, do something with it. If you have to scratch and save and work for everything you get then that's great, but shut up and keep working. Nobody likes a whiner.

My turtle brethren

I wish I had a little more to post after a week of no post. Sadly much like the turtle, I've been a bit slow moving in personal things. Work has found me animating some curious little cookies (or are they cakes?) Until I can post about that enjoy this random shot from a short film I'll probably never finish.

It came from space!

Not much to explain here. Sometime when I get bored at work I create little drawings and scenarios around the water mark in our work stationary. I just took this one a little further.
I suppose I'll have to upload what the original looks like, along with some others.

A not so fond farewell

Notice anything missing? That's right, I've been liberated from the tyranny of that evil caps lock key. Now let me explain something here and let me warn this will be a little geeky but it will make sense to everyone in the end.

You see in the 3d program Maya the keyboard shortcuts are case sensitive, meaning that pressing ctrl+b is not the same or ctrl+B, nor is w the same as W. Switching operations like rotation, translate and scale like the w,e,r keys are rendered useless by the evil caps lock key. Each key takes on a new and evil purpose. Up is down, good is evil, chocolate is peanut butter! The caps lock key, what with it's proximity to the shift button which is used quite a bit, finds itself in a position to be accidentally struck... all the time... completely screwing things up and preventing yet another fine advertisement from reaching your television screen.

How do we end this madness? Rip the little bastard off! Thats right, I grabbed a pen and popped that little sucka outa there. Think about it, when was the last time you ever used that caps lock key? When you typed a really important IM to someone and made your point by using ALL CAPS? or perhaps you sent a really nasty email letting them know what AN ABSOLUTE IDIOT THEY ARE? or perhaps the when forwarding some retarded email to 10 people you know so that they will BE BLESSED WITH THE LUCK OF THE IRISH? Well stop it. Nobody cares and nobody likes it. Just like you caps lock key, you've made my life difficult for the last time, and frankly I'm not sure I can stay in a relationship where I just never seem to get anything back. Good bye caps lock and don't be surprised if you friend scroll lock joins you soon.

Etch-a-sketch doodlin'

Oooooooo so I'm back from the dead. Yes it has been quite awhile but I'm finally in a place where I can steadily post pics and sketches on a regular basis. What with all the holidays and being knee deep in work, ads, what not. I suppose I can get into the nitty gritty of what I've been working on, and hopefully I will post some of the ads up, but until then...

We have etch-a-sketch! I love silly old toys like this. I'm not one of those people who collects lots of old retro toys and things, come to think of it I don't collect anything at all, But I love having old classic toys like this around. they inspire such creativity. Play-doh, etch-a-sketch, magnadoodle, etc. That being said one of my co-workers was nice enough to pick me up this neat pocket etch a store. So I started sketching on it.
It's still on my desk and I still have odd time between renders, so we shall see what the etch brings.
